The Somnath Temple is revered as the first among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva, making it an extremely important pilgrimage site for Hindus.
It is situated in Prabhas Patan, Veraval, on the western coast of Gujarat, India, overlooking the Arabian Sea.
The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times throughout history, most famously by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1024 CE. Its repeated reconstruction symbolizes Hindu resilience and devotion.
The current temple was reconstructed post-independence under the initiative of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, with its inauguration by President Rajendra Prasad in 1951.
