A Delhi court, on Friday, January 9, 2026, remanded eight individuals to 12-day judicial custody in connection with the recent violence at Turkman Gate. The accused are implicated in a stone-pelting incident that occurred during an anti-encroachment drive in the area, which resulted in injuries to five police personnel. With these fresh remands, the total number of arrests in the case has climbed to 13, which includes a juvenile.
The unrest flared up on the intervening night of January 6 and 7, 2026, when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) initiated a demolition drive near the Faiz-e-Elahi mosque and an adjoining graveyard. This operation was carried out in compliance with directives from the Delhi High Court, aiming to clear an estimated 36,000 to 39,000 square feet of encroached land. The targeted structures included commercial establishments like a diagnostic centre and a banquet hall. Authorities explicitly stated that the mosque itself was not affected or damaged during the drive.
However, the situation quickly escalated into clashes due to the spread of misinformation on social media, falsely claiming that the mosque was being demolished. This led a crowd of approximately 150-200 people to gather, who allegedly engaged in stone-pelting and throwing glass bottles at police and MCD workers. Police responded by using tear gas to disperse the crowd, and an FIR was subsequently registered against unidentified individuals. Investigations are ongoing, with police actively utilizing CCTV footage and bodycam recordings to identify more suspects. They are also examining the potential role of social media influencers and a Samajwadi Party MP who was present at the site. Meanwhile, defence counsels have raised allegations of assault on some accused within jail premises, prompting the court to request medical records.
