Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has been officially ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing One Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand due to an injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Monday, January 12, 2026, that Sundar reported an acute onset of discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI in Vadodara on Sunday. Captain Shubman Gill had initially mentioned after the match that Sundar sustained a side strain and would undergo scans. The injury forced Sundar to leave the field midway through New Zealand's innings after bowling just five overs, although he later bravely returned to bat at number eight in a tense chase. KL Rahul, his batting partner, expressed unawareness of the full extent of Sundar's discomfort during the game. Following Sundar's withdrawal, the Men's Selection Committee announced that Delhi all-rounder Ayush Badoni would join the squad as his replacement. This call-up marks Badoni's maiden inclusion in the Indian national team, a significant milestone for the 26-year-old. Badoni, known for his performances with Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and his List A cricket record of 693 runs and 18 wickets in 27 matches, will link up with the team in Rajkot for the second ODI.
