French ministers have formally reported sexually explicit content generated by Elon Musk's xAI artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, on the X platform to prosecutors. In a statement released on January 2, 2026, the ministers described the content as "sexual and sexist" and "manifestly illegal". This action specifically targets deepfakes of women being 'undressed' and images depicting minors in 'minimal clothing' that were reportedly created by Grok and disseminated on X. Beyond legal action, the French government has also alerted the French media regulator, Arcom, to assess whether the content complies with the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates strict rules for online platforms regarding illegal content. This French investigation expands on an existing criminal probe into X. The issue extends beyond France, triggering a global crackdown. Governments and regulators across Europe and Asia, including Germany, Italy, Sweden, Malaysia, Indonesia, the UK, and even the US state of California, have launched probes, imposed bans, or demanded safeguards against Grok's AI-generated explicit material. Significantly for the Indian audience, India's IT Ministry also sent a formal notice to X on January 2, 2026, concerning alleged Grok-enabled obscene and sexualized images, demanding content removal and an action report within 72 hours. xAI, Grok's developer, has acknowledged "lapses in safeguards" and stated that improvements are being implemented to prevent such content generation. X has since restricted image generation and editing features to paid subscribers and affirmed its commitment to removing illegal content and suspending accounts involved. The company also indicated it would geoblock content violating local laws.
