The incident, which occurred in the Regent Market area, was reportedly triggered by an argument between two youths concerning a food item. Reports from various sources also indicated that the dispute involved allegations of 'beef' sale.
Following the escalation of violence, where groups allegedly used sharp weapons and pelted stones, the local administration swiftly imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) across Sundargarh town to prevent further unrest. As a precautionary measure to maintain law and order and curb the spread of rumours, internet services were suspended for 24 hours, starting from 6 p.m. on January 15. All schools, colleges, and other educational institutions within the Sundargarh municipality area were ordered to remain closed on Friday, January 16, 2026.
Senior police and district officials, including the Sundargarh Collector and SP, were present at the scene, appealing for peace and ensuring heavy police deployment, with ten platoons (300 personnel) mobilised. While the situation was brought under control, efforts are underway to convene a peace committee meeting. No arrests had been made at the time of reporting, but authorities stated that two cases would be registered, and video footage was being examined.
