PM Modi inaugurates Delhi Metro corridors, completes India's first Ring Metro

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, March 8, 2026, inaugurated two pivotal new corridors of the Delhi Metro, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the capital's urban infrastructure and public transportation network. The inaugurated corridors include the 12.3-kilometer Majlis Park to Maujpur-Babarpur section of the Pink Line and the 9.92-kilometer Deepali Chowk to Majlis Park corridor of the Magenta Line. The Pink Line extension from Majlis Park to Maujpur-Babarpur features eight elevated stations, including Burari, Jharoda Majra, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Soorghat, Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, and Maujpur-Babarpur. This section also includes an impressive engineering feat: a new bridge over the Yamuna River and a unique double-decker viaduct carrying both a metro track and a road flyover. The Magenta Line extension from Deepali Chowk to Majlis Park adds seven elevated stations, which are Deepali Chowk, Madhuban Chowk, Uttar Pitampura-Prashant Vihar, Haiderpur Village, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Bhalswa, and Majlis Park. This corridor is a crucial extension, enhancing connectivity in underserved residential pockets of North-West Delhi and making the total length of the Magenta Line approximately 49 kilometers. Notably, this section also showcases an engineering marvel, reaching an impressive height of 28.36 meters at one point, making it one of the highest elevated stretches in the entire Delhi Metro network. These metro projects alone represent an investment exceeding ₹18,300 crore. The expansion aims to significantly de-congest North and East Delhi roads, improve urban mobility, and provide high-speed connectivity to key areas. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that these initiatives will play a vital role in transforming the national capital into a 'Viksit Delhi' (Developed Delhi) by reducing traffic congestion, easing daily commutes, and helping control pollution through encouraging public transport over private vehicles. Beyond the inaugurations, Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for three additional corridors under Phase V(A) of the Delhi Metro project, signaling further expansion of the network. These future corridors include the 9.913-kilometer underground Central Vista corridor from Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, a 2.263-kilometer underground extension of the Golden Line from Aerocity to Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-1, and a 3.9-kilometer elevated link of the Golden Line from Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj. These new corridors are designed to provide direct connectivity to important government and cultural landmarks, improve airport access, and strengthen links between South Delhi and NCR outskirts. In addition to the metro projects, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for other development projects worth approximately ₹15,200 crore under the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Redevelopment Plan, bringing the total value of projects launched today to around ₹33,500 crore. The GPRA redevelopment plan focuses on modernizing seven government colonies, including Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, and Sriniwaspuri. This initiative will provide over 9,350 modern flats for government employees and create approximately 48 lakh square feet of office space, enhancing administrative efficiency through an innovative self-sustaining financial model. This comprehensive infrastructure push underscores the government's commitment to improving urban living and connectivity in Delhi, benefiting millions of commuters and contributing to a more sustainable and developed metropolitan region.
