Uttar Pradesh is currently experiencing a major political and administrative upheaval following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of its electoral rolls, which has resulted in the deletion of a staggering 2.89 crore (28.9 million) voter names from the draft list. This figure represents approximately 18.7% of the state's total electorate, marking the highest percentage of deletions among all states where the SIR process has been implemented. Urban regions, including Lucknow with nearly 30% deletions, have been particularly affected. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh is reportedly in 'mission mode,' scrambling to prevent potential electoral losses ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BJP state president Pankaj Chaudhary have held meetings, instructing party workers, MPs, MLAs, and other office bearers to work on a 'war footing' to ensure that eligible voters whose names were removed are re-added to the rolls using Form-6. The party aims to add at least 200 voters per polling booth. Opposition parties, led by Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, have vehemently criticized the process, questioning the Election Commission of India's (ECI) credibility and alleging a deliberate conspiracy by the BJP to remove voters belonging to the PDA (Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak - Backward Classes, Dalits, and Minorities) communities. Yadav has also claimed that the Chief Minister had prior knowledge of the deletion numbers before the draft list was officially released. The ECI, however, has clarified that the mass deletions are part of a clean-up exercise to remove 'ASDD' (Absent, Shifted, Dead, Duplicate) voters. Reasons cited include 46.2 lakh deceased voters, 2.1 crore shifted voters, and 25.4 lakh duplicate entries. The draft electoral roll was released on January 6, 2026, and the window for citizens to file claims and objections for inclusion or correction of their names is open until February 6, 2026. The final voter list is scheduled to be published on March 6, 2026. This ongoing revision holds significant implications for the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh.
