B. Yashaswini, a 23-year-old third-year dental student specializing in Oral Medicine and Radiology at Oxford Dental College in Bengaluru, tragically died by suicide on January 8, 2026, at her residence in Chandapura. Her death has sparked widespread outrage and protests, with her family and fellow students alleging that she was subjected to relentless harassment and humiliation by college lecturers. Yashaswini's mother, Parimala, claims her daughter was publicly shamed and targeted over her skin tone, dressing style, and a temporary eye condition that caused her to miss classes. She was reportedly denied opportunities to present seminars and handle radiology cases, and verbally abused with derogatory remarks. This alleged mental torture and public shaming are believed to have driven the sensitive student to take the extreme step. Following a complaint lodged by Yashaswini's mother, the Suryanagar police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against five faculty members, including the college principal, for abetment to suicide under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Subsequently, The Oxford Dental College management suspended six faculty members from the Oral Medicine and Radiology Department – Dr. Anmol Razdan, Dr. Shabana Banu, Dr. Faika Kolkar, Dr. Alba Dinesh, Dr. Sindhu R, and Dr. Sushmini Hegde – pending further inquiry. While Yashaswini's suicide note reportedly stated that no one was responsible for her death, her family maintains that sustained harassment led to her demise. The investigation is ongoing, with police examining all allegations and a video purportedly showing Yashaswini distressed in college.
