Kashmir is set to experience a significant change in weather patterns with a fresh spell of winter precipitation expected over the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rainfall and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir between January 16 and 21. While some initial reports suggested snowfall likelihood in the plains between January 18 and 21, more detailed advisories from the IMD indicate that substantial moderate to heavy snowfall in the Kashmir plains, including Srinagar, is more strongly predicted to commence from January 20 and continue until January 25, with peak activity expected around January 22 and 23. Earlier in the period, specifically from January 17-18, only light snowfall is anticipated in isolated higher reaches. Isolated or very light snowfall might occur in the plains from January 19-21, but a major Western Disturbance bringing more widespread and heavier snow is expected to become most active from January 22 onwards. Current forecasts for the Jammu Division for Jan 18-21 show low chances of snow, with probabilities significantly increasing from January 22. This cold wave has already led to freezing conditions, with parts of Dal Lake experiencing freezing temperatures. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents and travellers to prepare for potential disruptions to transport and daily life, particularly during the more intense spell of snowfall. Temperatures across the valley continue to remain in sub-zero ranges.
