Bengaluru Quarry Collapse Kills Seven, CM Vows Safety Crackdown

A tragic incident unfolded near Bengaluru, Karnataka, on Thursday, July 2, 2026, when a massive rock collapse at a stone quarry claimed the lives of seven workers and left five others injured. The accident occurred around 7:00 AM at the Kaveri Crusher quarry (also referred to as Udayashankar Stone Crushers) in Madapatna village, located in Bengaluru South taluk under the jurisdiction of Tavarekere police station, approximately 60 km from Bengaluru. The victims, many of whom were migrant labourers from states like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh, as well as some from Karnataka, were reportedly engaged in routine quarrying operations when a huge boulder, weighing several tonnes, slid down from a height of about 40 feet and crushed them. Eyewitnesses described the event as sudden and catastrophic, leaving workers with no time to react. An earthmover operator who witnessed the incident stated that 'everything happened in a matter of a few seconds.' Preliminary investigations indicate that the collapse was likely due to the instability of the massive rock and loose soil, rather than a blast, although the exact cause is still under investigation. Around 16 labourers were working at the site when the incident occurred, with the rock falling from an upper-level quarry (Basaveshwara Stone Crushers) onto a lower one (SR Udayashankar's stone quarry). Following the tragedy, rescue operations were immediately launched by police, fire, and rescue teams, along with officials from the Department of Mines and Geology, to clear debris and recover the bodies. Five injured workers were transported to Rajarajeshwari Medical College and Hospital for treatment. The severity of the injuries was significant, with one of the injured initially reported to be in critical condition. Subsequent reports from some sources indicated that the death toll tragically rose to eight after one of the injured labourers succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and promptly ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. He assured that strict legal action, including the filing of First Information Reports (FIRs), would be initiated against any quarries found to be operating illegally or in violation of safety and mining regulations. Shivakumar emphasized the government's commitment to preventing such tragedies from recurring and stated that fresh guidelines for quarrying activities across the state would be issued. He visited the injured in the hospital and convened a meeting with mining and geology officials to discuss a statewide review of quarrying operations to ensure compliance with safety and environmental norms. Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara also weighed in, highlighting concerns about illegal quarries operating across the state and promising action against violators. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended their condolences to the bereaved families, expressing sadness over the incident and praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities have already taken action, with Bengaluru South district police arresting three individuals in connection with the collapse, including the owner of one of the quarries, identified as Anandaswamy, and supervisors Panduranga, N. Lokesh, and Raju. Officials have temporarily shut down 55 quarries in the area, stating that operations will only resume after they comply with prescribed safety measures.
