Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President, Vijay, appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi on Monday, January 12, 2026, for questioning in connection with the tragic Karur stampede case. The stampede, which occurred on September 27, 2025, during a TVK campaign event in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, resulted in the deaths of 41 people and left over 60 injured. Vijay was summoned under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and is being questioned as a witness in the ongoing probe. The CBI's line of questioning reportedly focused on critical aspects such as the alleged seven-hour delay in the program's commencement, crowd estimates, coordination with local police and district administration, and overall crowd management planning. The agency also specifically inquired about his departure from the venue during the rally. The investigation was transferred to the CBI following a Supreme Court order on October 13, 2025, which highlighted concerns over conflicting orders from the Madras High Court and questioned the rapid post-mortem examinations and cremations of victims. Several senior TVK functionaries, police personnel, the Karur District Collector, and the Superintendent of Police have also been previously questioned as part of the extensive inquiry. The TVK, for its part, has submitted video footage to the investigators, alleging that the tragedy was a result of lapses by the Tamil Nadu government.
