Google has begun rolling out a highly anticipated feature that finally allows users to change their primary @gmail.com email address. Previously, users were unable to modify their existing @gmail.com address without resorting to complex workarounds like creating a new Google account and losing historical data, or using third-party email options. This new capability enables users to switch to a different @gmail.com username while preserving their entire digital identity. When a user changes their Google Account email, the previous address automatically transforms into an alternate email, meaning both the old and new addresses will continue to receive mail. Crucially, all existing data, including emails, contacts, Google Drive files, photos, calendar events, subscriptions, and purchase history, remains fully intact and accessible. Users can also sign in to all Google services, such as Gmail, YouTube, Maps, and Drive, using either their old or new email address. The feature is being gradually rolled out to all users globally, with initial updates to support pages in Hindi suggesting an early presence in India. While this is a significant improvement, there are some limitations: users can generally change their Gmail address only once every 12 months, and some sources indicate a lifetime limit of three changes. Google advises users to review potential compatibility issues with services like Chromebooks or 'Sign in with Google' for third-party websites, as some app settings might reset.
