Kashmir is preparing for a series of Western Disturbances (WDs) expected to bring much-needed snowfall to the region over the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted multiple systems, beginning with a feeble WD that was expected to cause light snowfall in parts of north and central Kashmir on Friday evening, January 16, 2026. This initial disturbance is to be followed by another weak system, likely affecting the region between January 19 and 21, bringing light to moderate snowfall to higher altitude areas. The most significant weather event is a major Western Disturbance projected to approach from the evening of January 22, with its peak activity anticipated between January 22 and 24. This stronger system is expected to deliver moderate to heavy snowfall in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, and may also result in significant snow accumulation in the plains. The phenomenon is predicted to continue until January 25, with weather conditions improving from January 26. This forecast comes as a welcome relief for the region, as the plains of Kashmir, including Srinagar, have experienced a prolonged dry spell, failing to receive the season's first significant snowfall so far. The ongoing 'Chillai Kalan,' the harshest 40-day winter period that commenced on December 21 and concludes on January 30, makes these snowfalls crucial for replenishing water reservoirs. While temperatures had shown a temporary rise on January 16 due to increased cloud cover, cold conditions are generally expected to persist, particularly during the nights. Multiple credible sources, including Greater Kashmir, Asian Mail, ETV Bharat, and DD News, have corroborated these weather predictions, ensuring the accuracy of the impending weather changes.
