Legal battle involves High Court and CBFC over film clearance.
The production house of actor Vijay's highly anticipated film, 'Jana Nayagan', has moved the Supreme Court of India, challenging an interim order by the Madras High Court that stayed the film's censor certification. KVN Productions LLP filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) on or before January 12, 2026, against the Madras High Court's Division Bench order of January 9, 2026, which effectively halted the issuance of a U/A certificate.
The controversy stems from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) delaying the film's clearance. Initially, an examining committee had recommended a U/A 16+ certificate for 'Jana Nayagan' after certain modifications. However, the CBFC later referred the matter to a revising committee following an undisclosed complaint, despite earlier indications of certification. This eleventh-hour hurdle disrupted the film's planned Pongal release on January 9, 2026.
Earlier, a single-judge bench of the Madras High Court had directed the CBFC to issue the certificate immediately. However, the CBFC appealed this decision, leading to the Division Bench's stay order.
The legal battle has also garnered significant political attention. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi publicly extended his support for 'Jana Nayagan' on January 13, 2026, criticizing the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for allegedly blocking the film and labeling it an "attack on Tamil culture." He further stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not succeed in suppressing the voice of the Tamil people.
The Supreme Court is slated to hear the producer's plea on January 19, 2026, although some initial reports mentioned January 15. The outcome of this case is crucial for the film's release and is being closely watched, especially as 'Jana Nayagan' is widely publicized as actor Vijay's final film before his full-fledged entry into politics.
