Professor Shrinivas Kulkarni, an astronomer of Indian origin, has been awarded the prestigious Gold Medal by the UK's Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) for his significant contributions to time-domain astronomy. The RAS, a venerable institution with a 200-year history, bestowed its highest honor upon Kulkarni in recognition of his "sustained, innovative and ground-breaking contributions to multi-wavelength transient astrophysics." Kulkarni, who is based at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) as the George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science, has a distinguished career marked by numerous discoveries. His research has led to the identification of astronomical objects such as brown dwarfs and remote bursts of gamma rays. Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in the development and leadership of groundbreaking observational projects like the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF).
