Yuvraj Mehta, a 27-year-old software engineer, tragically drowned in Greater Noida after his Grand Vitara SUV plunged into a deep, water-filled pit at an under-construction building site in Sector 150. The incident occurred late Friday night, January 17, 2026, when Mehta was returning home amidst dense fog, which significantly impaired visibility and contributed to him losing control of his vehicle. According to reports, Mehta's car rammed into a boundary wall or drain before falling into the waterlogged basement. While some sources reported the pit's depth as 50 feet, others stated it was 70 feet deep. After the accident, Yuvraj managed to call his father, Raj Kumar Mehta, who promptly arrived at the scene. Police officials were also present, but immediate rescue efforts were critically hampered by the dense fog and, more significantly, by a severe lack of adequate rescue equipment, including trained swimmers. Eyewitnesses noted that Yuvraj remained trapped in the submerged vehicle, screaming for help, for a considerable period, estimated to be one to two hours. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force, and the fire department were eventually mobilized, but it took several hours for them to recover the victim's body. Raj Kumar Mehta has since filed a police complaint, alleging negligence on the part of authorities for failing to install necessary reflectors or barricades at the accident-prone spot, which he believes led to his son's untimely death. The tragedy has brought to light serious concerns regarding road safety and the preparedness of emergency services at construction sites in the region.
