A 20-year-old Kuki-Zo tribal woman, who was abducted and gang-raped during the early days of ethnic violence in Manipur in May 2023, tragically died on January 10 or 11, 2026, due to prolonged illness and complications linked to her injuries and trauma. The victim, who was 18 at the time of the assault, never fully recovered from the severe physical injuries, uterine complications, and profound psychological trauma she endured. She had been undergoing continuous medical treatment across hospitals in Manipur, Nagaland, and Assam, including a surgery in Guwahati in October 2025. The horrific incident occurred on May 15, 2023, when she was abducted from an ATM kiosk in Imphal by a mob, allegedly including women from the Meitei community who handed her over to armed Meitei extremist groups. She was then subjected to gang-rape at multiple locations before managing to escape. A Zero First Information Report (FIR) was registered on July 21, 2023, and the case was subsequently transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on July 22, 2023. However, more than two years since the crime, no arrests have been made, a fact that deeply distressed the victim and her family. Her death has ignited renewed outrage and demands for justice from Kuki-Zo organizations and civil society groups. Candlelight vigils have been held in Churachandpur, calling for swift arrests and accountability for the perpetrators. The incident underscores the ongoing suffering and systemic failures in delivering justice to victims of sexual violence during the prolonged ethnic conflict in Manipur, which has resulted in over 260 deaths and thousands displaced since May 2023.
