The controversy raises questions about India's national security narrative.
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently asserted that Beijing mediated tensions between India and Pakistan during their military confrontation in May 2025, a claim that has ignited strong reactions from India's opposition parties. Wang Yi, in a December 30, 2025, symposium, included the India-Pakistan truce among several global 'hotspot issues' where China played a mediating role.
India's opposition Congress party, through leader Jairam Ramesh, expressed deep concern, stating that China's claims contradict India's official stance and appear to mock the nation's security. Similarly, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi termed the Chinese assertion "an insult to India" and demanded that the Modi government issue an official and forceful rebuttal. Owaisi further questioned how China, which supplies a significant percentage of Pakistan's weapons and reportedly provided real-time intelligence during India's 'Operation Sindoor' (the military response to the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack), could simultaneously claim to be a neutral mediator.
The Indian government has consistently and firmly rejected any third-party involvement in resolving disputes with Pakistan. New Delhi maintains that the May 2025 ceasefire, following 'Operation Sindoor', was achieved through direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries, initiated by Pakistan. This is not the first instance of an external power claiming mediation; former US President Donald Trump had also repeatedly asserted his role in de-escalating the India-Pakistan conflict, claims which India similarly dismissed.
The ongoing controversy highlights the diplomatic complexities in South Asia and the persistent efforts by external powers to project influence, while India steadfastly upholds its position on bilateral resolution of issues with Pakistan.
