Right-wing activist Jake Lang, known for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack, organized a controversial event in Minneapolis titled the "March Against Minnesota Fraud" on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Lang had spent nearly four years in pretrial detention for 11 federal charges, including assaulting law enforcement officers, before receiving a pardon from then-President Donald Trump on January 20, 2025, alongside approximately 1,600 other January 6 defendants. Since his release, Lang has become a prominent far-right figure and is currently campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida, with public statements including a vow to "BAN ISLAM!!" if elected. The Minneapolis rally, permitted by the city, was ostensibly to protest alleged $8 billion fraud in Minnesota's social service programs, explicitly targeting Somali-owned businesses and welfare funds. Lang had also publicly announced intentions to burn a Quran and march through the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, home to a large Somali American population, raising alarm among community leaders and lawmakers who feared the event would incite harassment and violence. The protest took place amidst high tensions in Minneapolis, following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on January 7, 2026, which had already sparked widespread anti-ICE demonstrations. On the day of the event, Lang's small group of far-right activists was vastly outnumbered by hundreds of counter-protesters, organized by groups like the People's Action Coalition Against Trump, who gathered near Minneapolis City Hall. Videos showed counter-protesters throwing water balloons at Lang in sub-freezing temperatures and chasing him from the area. Lang was reportedly pulled from a City Hall window ledge and retreated to a hotel, exhibiting a head wound.
