The Indian Embassy in Tehran issued a fresh travel advisory on January 14, 2026, strongly urging all Indian nationals, including students, pilgrims, business persons, and tourists, currently in Iran to leave the country by available means of transport, including commercial flights. This advisory came in response to the escalating protests and the evolving, deteriorating security situation across Iran.
This latest directive follows an earlier advisory issued on January 5, 2026, by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which had advised Indian citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iran and exercise due caution, avoiding areas of protests or demonstrations. The MEA has reiterated its strong advice against travel to Iran until further notice. The widespread anti-government protests in Iran, which reportedly began in late December 2025 over economic conditions like inflation and currency devaluation, have since spread to numerous provinces and escalated into calls for political change.
Reports indicate a significant death toll and a communications blackout in various parts of Iran, making the situation increasingly unstable for residents and foreign visitors. Indian nationals in Iran are also advised to keep their travel and immigration documents readily accessible and to register with the Indian Embassy, if they haven't already done so. The Indian government is providing emergency contact numbers and an online registration portal for assistance, with families in India also able to register on behalf of their relatives in Iran in case of internet disruptions.
