Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya has ignited a major political firestorm with his highly contentious remarks on rape and women, drawing sharp condemnation across India. Baraiya, the legislator from Bhander in Datia, asserted that a man's mind could be 'distracted' by an 'extremely beautiful girl,' potentially leading to rape. He further exacerbated the controversy by questioning the existence of 'extremely beautiful' women among Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities. Adding to his bizarre 'rape theory,' Baraiya controversially linked sexual violence against women from these marginalized communities to certain religious scriptures. He claimed that such acts were encouraged by texts that allegedly describe them as 'teerth phal,' or 'fruit of pilgrimage.' Although pressed by a reporter to specify the scriptures, he failed to provide a clear answer, instead interpreting a Sanskrit verse to support his unfounded claims.
