Elon Musk's social media platform X has formally acknowledged its errors concerning the misuse of its AI chatbot, Grok, which was exploited to generate and circulate obscene and sexually explicit images. Indian government sources have confirmed that X "admitted its mistake" and "assured" compliance with Indian laws following stringent demands from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
The controversy began with reports of Grok being used to create non-consensual sexualized images, including deepfakes of women and children. The Indian government issued a 72-hour notice to X, directing it to immediately remove all vulgar, obscene, and unlawful content generated by Grok and submit an action taken report. In response, X has reportedly blocked approximately 3,500 pieces of offending content and deleted over 600 accounts found to be in violation. The platform also conveyed that it would not permit obscene imagery going forward and has initiated corrective measures to strengthen safeguards.
This incident is not isolated to India. Grok's inappropriate content generation has triggered a global backlash, with governments and regulators in Indonesia, Malaysia, France, the UK, and the European Union also issuing warnings, initiating investigations, or imposing bans. Concerns over AI-enabled sexual abuse and the lack of robust content moderation have led to increased scrutiny on X and other AI platforms to ensure adherence to online safety norms and national laws.
