Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya from Madhya Pradesh has sparked widespread outrage following bizarre and highly controversial remarks linking women's beauty, caste, and religious scriptures to the occurrence of rape. In a video circulated online, Baraiya claimed that merely seeing a beautiful woman could 'disturb' a man and potentially lead to sexual assault. Even more shockingly, he questioned the beauty of Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) women, while asserting that they are still subjected to rape because, according to him, it is mentioned in their scriptures. Baraiya controversially stated that these texts allegedly promise 'spiritual rewards' for having intercourse with women from certain castes, a claim that has drawn severe criticism for trivializing rape and promoting caste-based violence. He further alluded to these beliefs being a reason for sexual crimes against even small children. The statements have triggered strong condemnation from various quarters, including the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan labeling the comments as 'unacceptable' and 'shameless,' emphasizing that women should never be viewed or divided based on caste or appearance. The Indian National Congress, to which Baraiya belongs, has reportedly distanced itself from his remarks. Social media platforms have also seen a wave of criticism, demanding accountability for the misogynistic and casteist comments.
