India is actively pursuing consular access for 16 Indian seafarers who have been detained by Iranian authorities since December 8, 2025. The vessel, MT Valiant Roar, was intercepted by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) in international waters off the Dibba port near Dubai. Iranian authorities have accused the ship of smuggling approximately 6,000 metric tonnes of fuel.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran and the Consulate in Bandar Abbas have made numerous requests for consular access since December 14, 2025, but these have not yet been granted by Iran. The Indian Mission is also engaging with the UAE-based company that owns the ship to ensure legal support and provision of supplies like food, water, and fuel to the crew.
Concerns for the seafarers' welfare have intensified, with family members appealing directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgent intervention. Additionally, a plea was filed in the Delhi High Court by the families, urging the government to secure consular access, ensure a timely investigation, and facilitate their repatriation. On January 16, 2026, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Union government, seeking a status report on the matter by January 21, 2026.
Reports indicate that some of the detained crew members have been taken to Bandar Abbas prison, while others remain confined to a mess room on the vessel under armed guard, with all their personal belongings confiscated. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions in critical maritime chokepoints like the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. India continues its diplomatic efforts to ensure the well-being and safe return of its citizens.
