Reinforces 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' defence vision.
The Indian Army is undertaking a significant overhaul and upgrade of its in-service indigenous Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems (MBRLS), awarding contracts to leading private defence manufacturers, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Tata Advanced Systems (TASL). These awards, concluded within days of each other, reflect the Army's strategic focus on lifecycle management and ensuring the operational readiness of its critical artillery assets.
Under these partnerships, L&T and TASL, both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for Pinaka systems, will collaborate with the Army's Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), specifically the 510 Army Base Workshop (ABW). The extensive upgrade programme will involve replacing outdated components, upgrading critical sub-systems, and providing sustained technical support to the Army Base Workshops. This initiative is designed to enhance the long-term operational availability and modernization of the Pinaka regiments.
Both companies will initially conduct pilot overhauls of select Pinaka launchers and Battery Command Posts in collaboration with the 510 ABW. Following the successful completion of these pilot phases, the remaining systems will be upgraded by the 510 ABW, with L&T and TASL continuing to provide critical spares, quality assurance, and technical support. This public-private partnership model is considered a significant step for lifecycle support of 'Made-in-India' artillery systems and aligns with the government's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) initiative, leveraging indigenous design, manufacturing, and systems integration capabilities.
The Pinaka MLRS, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is a crucial all-weather, indirect-fire artillery system for the Indian Army, known for delivering high-volume firepower. This upgrade ensures the system remains cutting-edge and effective for years to come.
