India's First Made-in-India C-295 Aircraft Completes Maiden Test Flight

India has marked a historic milestone in its aerospace and defence manufacturing capabilities with the successful maiden test flight of the first indigenously produced C-295 military transport aircraft. The aircraft, manufactured under a pioneering partnership between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and European aerospace giant Airbus Defence and Space, took to the skies from the Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. It can perform various missions, including tactical troop and cargo movement, parachute and cargo dropping, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and special operations. With a capacity to carry up to 9,000 kg of payload or accommodate 24 stretchers, it offers enhanced capabilities. The induction of these aircraft will significantly boost the IAF's tactical airlift capabilities, especially for operations in challenging terrains like the Northern and North-Eastern sectors and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, where operations from semi-prepared strips are common. Critically, the C-295 fleet is slated to replace the Indian Air Force's ageing Avro-748 transport aircraft fleet, many of which have been in service for nearly six decades, and could also support the replacement of parts of the An-32 fleet. The C-295 'Make in India' programme is not just about assembling aircraft; it involves a comprehensive industrial ecosystem. More than 85% of the structural and final assembly of the 40 aircraft, along with the manufacturing of 13,000 detailed parts, will be carried out in India. This process has led to the certification of 21 special processes and the onboarding of 37 India-based suppliers, including numerous Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), fostering a robust domestic aerospace supply chain. Airbus has also transferred its entire production system for the C-295 to India, a first outside its home nations, ensuring that the manufacturing in Vadodara adheres to the highest global quality standards. This landmark achievement has been widely celebrated, with the Indian Air Force congratulating the entire team behind the successful maiden flight. The IAF stated that the achievement "reinforces India's growing aerospace capabilities and underscores the Indian Air Force's commitment to fostering indigenous defence capability under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat."
