A major political confrontation has erupted in West Bengal over the Election Commission of India's (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has escalated her concerns, sending multiple letters to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, alleging "serious irregularities, procedural violations and administrative lapses" in the ongoing process. She contends that the SIR is an "unplanned, arbitrary and adhoc" exercise designed for large-scale disenfranchisement of eligible voters, rather than correction or inclusion. Banerjee has also claimed that the SIR has led to numerous deaths, hospitalisations, and harassment, even targeting eminent personalities. Adding to her accusations, she alleged that the ECI is illegally using mobile applications developed by the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) IT cell for the revision.
In response, the BJP has vehemently rejected Banerjee's allegations. West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, in a letter to the CEC, dismissed her concerns as "nothing but pure fiction" and a "desperate attempt to sabotage a vital and timely democratic exercise." Other BJP leaders have echoed this, calling her claims "baseless" and politically motivated, asserting that the SIR is a transparent process essential for cleaning electoral rolls by removing "fictitious voters, ghosts of the deceased, and illegal infiltrators." The BJP suggests that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is opposing the SIR out of fear of losing its "vote bank of infiltrators and fake voters." The TMC, including MP Derek O'Brien, has also moved the Supreme Court, challenging the ECI's conduct of the SIR. This intense standoff highlights the high stakes involved ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal.
