Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on January 18, 2026, laid the foundation stone for the ambitious ₹6,957-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor project in Assam. This significant infrastructure development, undertaken in the Nagaon district, is designed to ensure safe movement for wildlife, particularly in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 34.45-km-long elevated corridor is a crucial part of a larger project that also includes the four-laning of the Kaliabor-Numaligarh stretch of National Highway-715 and the construction of bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat. This initiative is expected to drastically reduce human-animal conflict, especially during monsoon floods when animals are forced to cross busy highways to reach higher ground. Beyond conservation, the project aims to significantly improve regional connectivity and boost eco-tourism, contributing to Assam's overall development. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi also virtually flagged off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains: the Guwahati (Kamakhya)-Rohtak Amrit Bharat Express and the Dibrugarh-Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) Amrit Bharat Express. These new train services are poised to strengthen rail connectivity between India's Northeast and Northern regions, offering more convenient and affordable long-distance travel options. The event underscores the government's dual focus on enhancing critical infrastructure and prioritizing environmental conservation in ecologically sensitive areas like Kaziranga.
