NEET-UG Re-Exam: Nationwide Mock Drill Conducted, Security Measures Heightened

A nationwide mock drill was conducted across India on June 20, 2026, the day before the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, as part of comprehensive efforts to ensure a smooth, secure, and transparent conduct of the crucial medical entrance test. Officials stated that security had also been significantly tightened at the National Testing Agency (NTA) headquarters in the national capital. The re-examination was scheduled to be held on June 21, 2026, from 2 PM to 5:15 PM in the pen-and-paper mode. It was to be conducted across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad, with over 2.279 million candidates expected to appear. This re-examination followed the cancellation of the original NEET-UG 2026 exam held on May 3, 2026, due to widespread allegations of a paper leak, which had triggered nationwide outrage, political discourse, and legal challenges. The mock drill was intended to test the preparedness at examination centers and streamline coordination among the various agencies involved in the examination process. Authorities had put in place extensive security and administrative measures to ensure the smooth and seamless conduct of the examination. The NTA has implemented a multi-layered security framework, which includes end-to-end secure handling of confidential materials under sealed protocols. To further bolster security, GPS-enabled vehicles with police escorts were used for the movement of examination materials. Additionally, CCTV surveillance was in place at all examination centers, with feeds directed to centralized control rooms. Aadhaar-based biometric authentication was also a key measure to prevent impersonation. The Indian Air Force was engaged for the transportation of question papers as part of enhanced security measures. The mock drill also involved testing of security systems, CCTV surveillance, biometric verification, AI monitoring, question paper logistics, and overall center-level preparedness. Around 1,38,560 CCTV cameras and over 95,000 exam rooms were reportedly tested during the drill. For candidates with disabilities (PwD/PwBD) eligible for compensatory time, they were allowed to write the examination until 6:20 PM. Candidates were instructed to report to their examination centers between 11 AM and 1:30 PM, with the entry gates closing strictly at 1:30 PM, and no candidate permitted entry thereafter. The NTA had also made arrangements for candidates' comfort and facilities, including power backup, drinking water, sanitation facilities, and medical support at the examination centers. Diabetic candidates were permitted to carry sugar tablets and fruits along with a transparent water bottle. The entire exercise underscored the NTA's commitment to maintaining the integrity and fairness of the NEET-UG examination process, especially in the wake of the previous cancellation. The results of the re-examination were later declared on July 16, 2026, with 11.21 lakh candidates qualifying. Aryan Gupta and Panshul Bansal emerged as joint toppers, securing 715 marks each.
