Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has reportedly made a significant and widely supported recommendation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI): the introduction of mandatory 15-day red-ball preparatory camps before every Test series. This assertive move by Gill comes in the wake of India's recent struggles in the longest format of the game, including consecutive home Test whitewashes against New Zealand in 2024 and South Africa in 2025. The lack of adequate preparation time, often due to a packed international schedule transitioning directly from white-ball cricket to Tests, has been identified as a key factor in these setbacks. The proposal has garnered strong backing from former Indian cricketers, with Robin Uthappa famously terming it an "insane call" in a positive light, and Aakash Chopra also endorsing the initiative. The BCCI has responded positively to Gill's vision, acknowledging the need for enhanced Test preparation and expressing willingness to grant the young captain a greater say in the team's long-format planning. To address the logistical challenges posed by head coach Gautam Gambhir's potential commitments with white-ball assignments, the board is reportedly exploring the possibility of utilizing the services of VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy (Centre of Excellence), to organize and oversee these crucial red-ball camps.
