North India is experiencing an intensified winter chill today, January 19, as two Western Disturbances approach the region in quick succession. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), these systems are significantly impacting the Western Himalayan region throughout the coming week. Westerly winds are bolstering the cold, leading to slightly lower minimum temperatures across states including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
Dense to very dense fog continues to blanket parts of Northwest India and Bihar for the next two to three days, with very dense fog particularly affecting Uttar Pradesh until January 19. Delhi is also forecast to have a partly cloudy sky with moderate to dense fog during the morning hours, coupled with winds that will add to the chill. Cold wave conditions are expected to persist across numerous North Indian states, with Himachal Pradesh and Odisha specifically noted for very likely cold wave conditions on January 19.
While the initial chill intensifies, the forecast indicates a likelihood of precipitation later in the week. Isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall is possible in the Western Himalayan region by January 23. For the plains of Northwest India, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall is anticipated between January 22 and 24. This spell of rain and snow is considered beneficial for rabi crops such as wheat, mustard, and barley, as it improves soil moisture and supports grain formation. Minimum temperatures are expected to show a gradual rise in many parts of the country after January 19.
