The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti alliance has achieved a decisive victory in the recent Mumbai (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC) and Pune (Pune Municipal Corporation or PMC) civic elections, further cementing its political dominance in Maharashtra. The counting of votes, which concluded on January 16-17, 2026, revealed a strong performance by the BJP across the state's urban centers.
In Mumbai, the BJP secured a significant win, ending nearly three decades of control by the undivided Shiv Sena. The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, crossed the majority mark in the 227-member BMC by winning 118 seats. The BJP emerged as the single largest party in India's richest civic body.
Similarly, in Pune, traditionally considered a stronghold of the Pawar family, the BJP registered a landslide victory. The party not only retained its majority but also increased its seat count from the previous 2017 elections, securing 119 seats out of 165 in the PMC. The BJP's strong performance extended to Pimpri-Chinchwad as well.
The results delivered a major blow to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) factions led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar. In Pune Municipal Corporation, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP secured only 21 seats, while the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) managed a mere three. Their combined efforts, along with the reunion with the Thackeray factions, failed to pose a serious challenge to the BJP's surge in these key municipal bodies. Statewide, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 1,400 seats, with the Mahayuti alliance projected to form the government in 25 out of 29 municipal corporations. This outcome underscores the BJP's growing influence and raises questions about the future political landscape for the opposition in Maharashtra.
