A 20-year-old Kuki-Zo woman, identified as 'Kim*' by some reports and Nengtinlhing Haokip by others, who was brutally gangraped during the initial phase of the Manipur ethnic violence in May 2023, tragically died on January 10, 2026. Her death, at the age of 20, is attributed to a prolonged illness stemming from the severe physical injuries and profound psychological trauma she endured during the assault.
The incident occurred on May 15, 2023, when she was abducted from Imphal by four men, allegedly assaulted by Meira Paibis, and subsequently gangraped by three men, reportedly affiliated with the Arambai Tenggol outfit. She was pushed off a hilltop and rescued by an auto-rickshaw driver. Despite an FIR being filed on July 21, 2023, and the case being transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on July 22, 2023, no arrests have been made more than two years after the horrific crime.
The victim's mother, Lhingnei Haokip, reported that her daughter never fully recovered, enduring breathing problems, insomnia, and living in constant fear. She underwent multiple medical procedures, including a surgery in Guwahati in October 2025, but the toll on her physical and mental health was ultimately fatal. Her case was initially highlighted in a complaint to the National Commission for Women (NCW) in June 2023.
Her death has sparked renewed calls for justice from the Kuki-Zo community and various tribal organizations, who held candlelight vigils in Churachandpur demanding swift arrests and accountability. This tragic event underscores the ongoing challenges of impunity and human rights violations faced by victims in the protracted ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur, which led to widespread displacement and casualties.
