Concerns raised about lack of age restrictions for teaser content online.
The recently released teaser for Kannada star Yash's upcoming film 'Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups' has ignited significant controversy, prompting a formal complaint from the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Women's Wing. Released on January 8 to coincide with Yash's 40th birthday, the teaser quickly drew widespread criticism on social media, particularly for a brief intimate scene featuring Yash's character with a woman inside a car.
The AAP Women's Wing submitted a complaint to the Karnataka State Women's Commission, alleging that the teaser contains "obscene visuals" that negatively impact the social well-being of women and children and undermine Kannada cultural values. AAP leaders urged the Commission to direct the state government to immediately withdraw or cancel the teaser, emphasizing the need to safeguard social morality and protect vulnerable sections of society. They further argued that visual content on public platforms must adhere to cultural sensitivity and responsibility, especially given the teaser's public release without age restrictions or warnings.
Beyond the AAP's complaint, advocate Lohith Hanumappa also filed a separate complaint with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), seeking intervention to either remove or modify the teaser to comply with content norms. This complaint highlighted the lack of mandatory certification for teasers on digital platforms, which allows explicit content to be freely accessible to minors.
Director Geetu Mohandas responded to the backlash through a cryptic Instagram post, stating she was "Chilling while people figure out female pleasure, consent, women playing systems, etc, etc." This response itself generated further debate, with some questioning her stance given her past activism against the objectification of women in cinema. The film, co-written by Mohandas and Yash, is slated for a March 19, 2026 release and also stars Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, and Tara Sutaria.
