India is set to inaugurate its first Vande Bharat Sleeper train in January 2026, marking a significant upgrade in long-distance rail travel. The highly anticipated train will initially connect Guwahati and Howrah (Kolkata/Kamakhya), offering a faster, more comfortable, and modern overnight journey between eastern and northeastern India. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the trials, testing, and certification are complete, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to flag off the service around mid-January.
The 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper train boasts a capacity for 823 passengers, comprising 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 4 AC 2-tier coaches, and 1 AC First Class coach. An "inside look" reveals a strong emphasis on passenger comfort and modern amenities. Key features include ergonomically designed berths with extra cushioning and redesigned ladders for easier access to upper berths. Washrooms have been upgraded with deep, anti-splash washbasins and modular fittings, ensuring high hygiene standards. Other enhancements include adjustable window shades, automatic doors with vestibules for smooth coach movement, integrated reading lights with USB charging ports, and improved HVAC systems with UV-C air filtration.
Safety is paramount, with the train equipped with the indigenous KAVACH automatic train protection system, emergency talk-back units for passenger-crew communication, and fire-resistant materials across the cabin. While designed for a maximum speed of 180 kmph and achieving this in trials, the operational speed on the Howrah-Guwahati route will be up to 130 kmph. Fares for the inaugural route are set to be competitive, with 3AC starting around ₹2,300, 2AC at approximately ₹3,000, and 1AC at ₹3,600, inclusive of onboard regional cuisine. This new variant aims to offer a premium, yet affordable, travel experience, positioning it as a modern alternative to existing express trains for overnight journeys.
