Congress leader Rahul Gandhi vehemently criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the brutal murder of 24-year-old Tripura student Anjel Chakma in Dehradun was a direct consequence of the 'normalisation' of hatred by the ruling party. Gandhi, in a post on X on December 29, 2025, labeled the incident a 'horrific hate crime,' stating that hate does not emerge overnight but is 'fed daily—especially to our youth—through toxic content and irresponsible narratives' promoted by the BJP's leadership. Anjel Chakma, an MBA student, was tragically attacked on December 9, 2025, in Dehradun alongside his younger brother, Michael. The assault occurred after they objected to alleged racial slurs, including terms like 'Chinese' and 'Chinese momo.' He sustained severe injuries to his head, neck, and back, reportedly from knives, brass knuckles, and a metal bracelet ('kada'), and succumbed on December 26, 2025, after a prolonged battle for life in hospital. While some police officials initially downplayed the racial angle, the First Information Report (FIR) and numerous reports confirm the presence of caste-based and racial abuse. The incident has ignited widespread protests in Tripura and across India, prompting calls for stringent action. Of the six accused, five have been apprehended, with authorities actively working towards the extradition of the primary suspect, Yagyaraj Awasthi, from Nepal.
