The iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru has officially received conditional permission from the Karnataka state Home Department to host both Indian Premier League (IPL) and international cricket matches. This development brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the venue's future, which had been put on hold for major cricketing events after a tragic stampede claimed 11 lives during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL 2025 trophy celebrations on June 4 last year. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) confirmed the approval, stating that it is subject to strict compliance with specific terms and conditions prescribed by the government and concerned authorities. These conditions primarily focus on enhanced safety, security, and crowd management measures, following recommendations from a government-appointed task force and an expert committee. The KSCA has expressed confidence in fulfilling all the stipulated requirements and has presented a detailed compliance roadmap. Crucially, the government retains the authority to inspect the stadium at any stage and may revise or withdraw the permission if safety arrangements are found to be inadequate. A final decision on the crowd capacity for matches will also be made only after the completion of all required works and a fresh inspection by the Expert Committee. This conditional clearance paves the way for the return of high-profile cricket to Bengaluru, potentially including RCB's home games for IPL 2026, which had been in speculation regarding a shift to other venues.
