Incident occurred at Sports Authority of India facility in Kerala.
Two girl trainee athletes, identified as 17-year-old Sandra from Kozhikode and 15-year-old Vyshnavi from Thiruvananthapuram, were tragically found dead, hanging in their room at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel in Kollam, Kerala, on Thursday morning. The incident came to light around 5 am when fellow hostel inmates noticed that the girls had not reported for their scheduled morning training session. After repeated knocks on their room door went unanswered, hostel authorities forced the door open and discovered both girls hanging from ceiling fans. Emergency services were alerted, but they were declared dead at the scene.
Police have launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The Kollam East police have registered a case of unnatural death. Officials have stated that no suicide note has been recovered from the room, and the exact reason for their deaths is yet to be ascertained. Sandra was an athletics trainee studying in Plus Two, while Vyshnavi was a kabaddi player in Class 10, both staying at the SAI hostel as part of their training program. It was noted that Vyshnavi, though officially allotted a different room, had spent the previous night in Sandra's room, and both were seen by other inmates early that morning. Statements will be recorded from other sportspersons, trainers, hostel staff, and relatives as part of the ongoing probe. The bodies have been shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem examinations, after which they will be handed over to their families.
