West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari's convoy was allegedly attacked on Saturday night, January 10, 2026, in the Chandrakona Road area of Paschim Medinipur district while he was returning from Purulia. Adhikari claimed that around 8:20 PM, his vehicle was assaulted by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters carrying party flags and armed with bamboo sticks and rods. He further alleged that the local police were present at the scene but remained 'mute spectators' and did not intervene to stop the violence.
Following the incident, Adhikari staged a six-hour sit-in protest (dharna) at the Chandrakona Road police outpost, demanding the immediate registration of an FIR and the arrest of the alleged attackers. He also reportedly spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, informing him about the incident.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially sought a detailed report from Suvendu Adhikari's office regarding the alleged attack. Adhikari's office is reportedly compiling a detailed report, including video footage of the incident, to be submitted to the MHA.
The BJP has strongly condemned the alleged attack, with leaders echoing the sentiment that 'Even the LoP is not safe' in West Bengal, accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led regime of fostering a 'culture of violence and impunity.' In contrast, the Trinamool Congress has vehemently denied the allegations, with spokespersons claiming there was no attack on Adhikari's convoy and that people were merely chanting 'Joy Bangla' slogans. Some TMC leaders dismissed the incident as a 'well-scripted drama' orchestrated by the BJP. This event has further escalated political tensions between the BJP and the ruling TMC in West Bengal.
