Priya Kapur, the widow of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has initiated a criminal defamation case against her sister-in-law, Mandhira Kapur Smith, in Delhi's Patiala House Court. The complaint, filed through Senior Advocate Maninder Singh and counsel Smriti Asmita, alleges that Mandhira Kapur Smith made a series of false and damaging statements across various social media platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), as well as in a podcast titled 'In Controversial'. Pooja Chaudhari, the host of the podcast, has also been named as a party in the case.
According to the complaint, Mandhira Kapur Smith's remarks constitute a "sustained and deliberate campaign" to harm Priya Kapur's reputation, question her honor, womanhood, and social standing, and cast doubt on the legitimacy and sanctity of her marriage to Sunjay Kapur. The complaint asserts that these statements contain "false assertions, insinuations, and personal attacks presented as established facts" despite the underlying issues being sub judice as part of the ongoing legal battle over Sunjay Kapur's estimated ₹30,000 crore estate.
The criminal defamation case comes amidst recent developments in related proceedings, where Priya Kapur sought certified copies of the 2016 divorce settlement between Sunjay Kapur and his first wife, actor Karisma Kapoor. Mandhira Kapur Smith publicly criticized this move, suggesting it was an attempt to "divert from what is going on in reality" and emphasized the confidentiality of divorce proceedings, especially when children are involved.
The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Siddhant Sihag of the Patiala House Courts heard the matter on Saturday, January 17, 2026, and has scheduled Priya Kapur to appear before the court on January 21 for the recording of pre-summoning evidence. This legal action further intensifies the family's complex inheritance dispute.
