The tragic death of a NEET aspirant in a Patna hostel has taken a critical turn, as her post-mortem report has confirmed signs of sexual assault and a prolonged violent struggle, directly contradicting initial police statements. The 18-year-old student, originally from Jehanabad, was found unconscious in her hostel room in Patna's Chitragupta Nagar area between January 6 and 9 and succumbed to her injuries on January 11 after several days in a coma.
Initially, Patna Police had downplayed the allegations of sexual assault, citing an initial gynaecologist's examination, CCTV footage, and suggesting the possibility of suicide due to an overdose of sleeping pills or typhoid. However, the post-mortem report, which became public around January 14-16, presented starkly different findings. Conducted by a medical board at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH), the autopsy revealed deep crescent-shaped nail marks around the neck and shoulders, multiple scratch marks across the chest, injuries on the back, and fresh wounds on the private parts. Doctors concluded that these injuries were ante-mortem, indicating the student was conscious and actively resisted her attackers for an estimated one-and-a-half to two hours before her death. The report explicitly stated that sexual violence could not be ruled out, and some reports even confirmed sexual assault and the possibility of multiple assailants.
Following these revelations, public outrage intensified, leading to widespread protests by students and the victim's family, who brought her body to Kargil Chowk and demanded justice. The family has consistently alleged foul play and a potential cover-up by initial investigators, hospital management, and even accused the hostel owner. In response to the escalating pressure and contradictory medical findings, Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on January 16. The hostel owner, Manish Kumar Ranjan, has been arrested to prevent evidence tampering, and the SIT, comprising senior officers, is now expediting the probe, with the DGP and Patna Range IG monitoring it daily. Political leaders, including Prashant Kishor and RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, have also criticized the government's handling of the case and called for swift justice. The investigation is ongoing, with scrutiny extending to the conduct of police officials and medical personnel who initially dismissed the allegations.
