Vodafone Idea (Vi) has officially unveiled a staggered repayment schedule for its Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues, following a significant relief package from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The DoT has frozen Vi's AGR liabilities, including principal, interest, and penalties, amounting to ₹87,695 crore as of December 31, 2025, stemming from the fiscal years 2006-07 to 2018-19. This relief, approved by the Union Cabinet on December 31, 2025, effectively provides a crucial financial lifeline to the debt-laden telecom operator.
Under the new payment plan, Vodafone Idea will pay a maximum of ₹124 crore annually for a period of six years, from March 2026 to March 2031. Subsequently, the annual payment will be capped at ₹100 crore for four years, from March 2032 to March 2035. The remaining AGR dues will then be paid in equal annual installments over another six years, starting from March 2036 and concluding by March 2041.
A critical aspect of this relief is the constitution of a committee by the DoT to reassess the total AGR dues, with its final decision being binding. Any reassessed amount will also be integrated into the repayment schedule between March 2036 and March 2041. This government intervention, which has also seen the government acquire a 49% stake in Vodafone Idea through equity conversion of earlier dues, aims to ensure the viability of the telecom sector and prevent a potential duopoly. While the immediate cash flow pressure is eased, the company still faces challenges related to spectrum dues and the need for fresh capital infusion for network expansion, including 5G rollout. This development is highly significant for India's telecommunications industry, investors, and the future of competition in the market.
