A delegation from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), led by Vice-Minister Sun Haiyan of the International Department, recently visited New Delhi, engaging in separate meetings with leaders of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), its ideological parent. The delegation first met senior BJP leaders on a Monday at the party headquarters, followed by an interaction with RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale at the RSS office on the subsequent Tuesday. The BJP's national general secretary, Arun Singh, confirmed discussions aimed at enhancing communication and interaction between the two parties. Both the BJP and RSS described these engagements as 'courtesy calls,' with the RSS stating the Chinese side had expressed a desire to understand the Sangh's functioning.
These meetings, however, drew sharp criticism from the Opposition Congress party, which labeled the interactions as 'hypocrisy.' Congress leaders, including Pawan Khera and Supriya Shrinate, questioned the timing and intent of these high-level meetings, especially given the backdrop of strained India-China relations and ongoing border disputes, including China's recent claims over the Shaksgam Valley. The Congress accused the BJP of 'double standards,' pointing out that the ruling party often criticizes the Congress for its past engagements with the CCP while engaging in similar dialogues. They demanded full accountability and transparency regarding the agenda and outcomes of these closed-door discussions. The BJP, in response, highlighted that their meetings were held openly, in contrast to alleged 'secret' agreements by the Congress with the CPC in the past.
