The United States has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker, the Marinera (previously named Bella 1), in the North Atlantic following a weeks-long pursuit. The vessel, which was reportedly operating under a Guyanese flag before being re-registered as Russian during the chase, was intercepted due to its alleged connections to Venezuela and its involvement in activities violating US sanctions. This operation is part of an escalating campaign by the US to enforce a maritime blockade and block illicit oil shipments linked to Venezuela. Among the 28 crew members onboard the Marinera were three Indian nationals. The crew also included 6 Georgians, 17 Ukrainians, and 2 Russians. US authorities indicated that the crew may be subject to prosecution for federal law violations. Russia swiftly condemned the seizure, with its transport ministry stating it lost contact with the vessel after US forces boarded it. Senior Russian lawmakers described the US action as "outright piracy" and a violation of international maritime law, warning of potential escalation in US-Russia tensions.
